እኛና ስልካችን

ሰሚት አካባቢ ኪዳነ ምሕረት ቤተ ክርስቲያን ውስጥ ነው፡፡ ጊዜው ሕፃን አዋቂ ሳይባል በርካታ ኦርቶዶክስ ክርስቲያኖች በሚጾሙት ፍልሰታ ጾም ወቅት ነው፡፡ በቤተ ክርስቲያኑ መቅደስ የተገኙት ምእመናን የቅዳሴ መጀመርን ይጠባበቃሉ፡፡

አንዳንዶቹ በፀጥታና በዝምታ ተቀምጠዋል፡፡ ፀሎት የሚያደርጉም አሉ፡፡ በሠላሳዎቹ መጨረሻ እንደምትሆን የገመቷት ወጣት ሁኔታ እንዳስገረማቸው አጠገቧ የነበሩት እናት ይናገራሉ፡፡ ወጣቷ ቤተ መቅደስ ገብታ ከተቀመጠች ጀምሮ እጇና ዓይኗ ከስልኳ አልተለዩም፡፡ አንዴም ቀና ሳትል በዚህ ሁኔታ ረዥም ደቂቃዎችን አሳለፈች፡፡ ቅዳሴ ተጀመረ ተጋመሰም፡፡ ወጣቷ ቅዳሴ ሲጀመር ያስቀመጠችውን ሞባይል ስልኳን አንስታ ከፍ አድርጋ በመያዝ ፀሎት እንደሚያደርግ ሰው ሁሉ አሁንም አሁንም ትሰግዳለች፡፡ ልጅቷን በመገረም ሲከታተሉ የነበሩት እናት ወዲያው በስልኳ የፀሎት መጽሐፍ እያነበበች እንደሆነ ተረዱ፡፡
ታክሲ ላይ፣ ካፍቴሪያ፣ በስበሰባ አዳራሽ ሌላም ሌላም ቦታ ላይ አንድ ጠረጴዛ ተጋርተው ተጠጋግተው የተቀመጡ ጓደኛሞች እንኳ እርስ በርስ ከመጫወት ይልቅ ስልካቸውን መርጠው በስልክ ሲጠመዱ መመልከት የተለመደ እየሆነ ነው፡፡ ሁኔታው ሰዎች ከመቼውም በላይ ስልካቸውን የመረጡበት ጊዜ ነው ለማለት የሚያስደፍር ብዙ ነገሮችን ማንሳት ይቻላል፡፡
ሰብሰብ ብለው ሻይ ቡና እያሉ፣ ለማስተዛዘን ከለቅሶ ቤት ተገኝተው፣ የቤተሰብ እራት ላይ፣ ስብሰባ ላይ ወይም ክፍል ውስጥ ሰዎች መልዕክት በመላክ ወይም በመመለስ፣ ማኅበራዊ ድረ ገጾችን በመመልከት፣ ፎቶ በማንሳት አልያም በመነሳት መጠመድ በብዛት እየተስተዋለ ያለ ትዕይንት ነው፡፡ ጥቂት የማይባሉ ስልካቸው ድምፅ አሰማም አላሰማም የትም ይሁኑ የት አሁንም አሁንም ስልካቸውን እያወጡ መመልከት ልምድ የሆነባቸው ይመስላል፡፡ ምንም ነገር እንዳያመልጠኝ በሚል ጥንቃቄ ወይም አንዳንድ ነገሮች፣ ኦን ላይን ያሉ ወዳጆች ቢያመልጡኝስ በሚል ሥጋት በማንኛውም ሰዓት የስልካቸውን ኢንተርኔት ኦን አድርገው የሚንቀሳቀሱም አጋጥመውናል፡፡
በሠላሳዎቹ አጋማሽ የሚገኝ ወጣት ነው፡፡ በአንድ የግል ተቋም ውስጥ ኤክስፐርት ነው፡፡ ሁልጊዜም ስልኩ ኦን መሆኑን በተደጋጋሚም ስልኩን እንደሚመለከት ይናገራል፡፡ በተለይም ኢንተርኔቱን ክፍት የሚያደርገው ማኅበራዊ ድረ ገፆች ላይ የሚወጡ ነገሮች እንዲያመልጡት ስለማይፈልግ፤ ኦንላየን ከሚያገኛቸው ጓደኞቹ ጋርም ማውራት (ቻት ማድረግ) ስለሚፈልግ እንደሆነ ይገልጻል፡፡
‹‹ከጓደኞቼ ጋር ምሳ ልበላ ቁጭ ብዬ ስልኬን ዓየት ላደርግ እችላለሁ ግን ሳልቆይ ቶሎ አስቀምጣለሁኝ፡፡ ቤትም ሌላ ቦታም ስልኬን አየት አደርጋለሁኝ ግን ብዙ አልቆይም›› ይላል፡፡ እሱ እንደሚለው በቀን የሀምሳ ወይም የመቶ ብር ካርድ የሚጨርስ ቢሆንም ይህን እንደ ችግር አይቆጥረውም፡፡ ምክንያቱም ከጓደኞቹ ጋር ቻት ማድረጉንና ማኅበራዊ ድረ ገጾች ላይ የሚወጡ ነገሮችን መከታተሉን እንደ ትልቅ ነገር ይመለከተዋል፡፡
ከቅርብ ጊዜ ወዲህ በተለይም የብዙዎችን ስማርት ፎን መያዝ ተከትሎ ሰዎች ሁሉ ነገራቸው ከስልካቸው ጋር እየሆነ መሆኑን መታዘባቸውን ይናገራሉ አቶ ጌትነት አማረ፡፡ በአንድ መንግሥታዊ ባልሆነ ድርጅት ውስጥ የትምህር ጥናትና ምርምር ኤክስፐርት ናቸው፡፡ ‹‹ሻይ ቡና ለማለት ከጓደኛው ጋር ቁጭ ብሎ አጠገቡ ያለውን ጓደኛውን ትቶ አሜሪካ ወይም አውሮፓ ካለ ጓደኛው ጋር ቻት የሚያደርግ ብዙ ሰው አለ፡፡›› የሚሉት አቶ ጌትነት፣ በእንዲህ ያለ ሁኔታ ውስጥ አብሮ ያለው ሰው እንዴት ስልኩ ላይ ከተጠመደው ሰው ጋር ሊያወራ ሊጫወትስ ይችላል? ሲሉ ይጠይቃሉ፡፡ የዚህ ዓይነቱ ሁኔታ የራሳቸውን ቤተሰብ ጨምሮ በቤት ውስጥ፣ ቢሮና ሌሎችም ቦታዎች ላይ ዕለት በዕለት እየታየ እንዳለ በመግለጽ የባሰ ያሉትን አጋጣሚ ያስታውሳሉ፡፡
ስብሰባ ላይ ነው፡፡ ጥናቷን በፕሮጀክተር በማቅረብ ላይ ያለችው ባለሙያ ጥያቄ ወይም አስተያየት ካለ ጠይቃ አሁንም አሁንም ስልኳ ወዳለበት ጥግ ሔደት እያለች ስልኳን ትመለከታለች፡፡ አንዴ ሁለቴ እንጂ አትደጋግመውም ብለው አሰቡ ታዳሚዎቹ፡፡ አቅራቢዋ ግን መለስ መለስ እያለች ስልኳን መነካካቷን ቀጠለች፡፡ ነገሩ የገረማቸው የሻይ ዕረፍት ላይ ለምን እንደዚያ እንደምታደርግ ጠየቋት፡፡ ከጠየቋት መካከል እሳቸው አንዱ ነበሩ፡፡
የአቅራቢዋ መልስ ‹‹ስልኬን በተደጋጋሚ መመልከቴ እኔን ምንም አይረብሸኝም እናንተም የምትሰጡትን አስተያየት በደንብ ነው የምከታተለው›› የሚል ነበር፡፡ እሷ ብቻ ሳትሆን ከሰው መካከል ሆነው በስልካቸው የሚጠመዱ በአካል በተገኙበት ቦታ የሚካሔደውን ነገር ከልብ አትከታተሉም ሲባሉ እንከታተላለን መሳተፍም እንችላለን ብለው እንደሚከራከሩ ይገልጻሉ፡፡ ነገር ግን በአንድ ጊዜ ሁለትና ከዚያ በላይ ነገሮችን ለማድረግ መሞከር አስቸጋሪ እንደሆነ የተረጋገጠ ነው፡፡
‹‹ሰው ትልቅ ጉዳይ ለማዋየት ቀጥራቸው እንኳ አሁንም አሁንም ስልካቸውን ከመመልከት የማይቦዝኑ አሉ፡፡ መነጋገር የሚያምረው ዓይን ዓይን እየተያዩ ነው፡፡ ይህ ካልሆነ ግን ሰው እንዴት ማውራቱን ሊቀጥል ይችላል? እኔ ከእንደዚህ ዓይነት ሰው ጋር ለመቀጣጠርም ፍላጐት የለኝም›› ይላሉ፡፡
እንደ እሳቸው እምነት የዚህ ዓይነቱ የሰዎች በሞባይል ስልክ መጠመድ ቤተሰባዊ፣ ማኅበራዊ ግንኙነት እንዲሁም ጓደኝነት ላይ አሉታዊ ተፅዕኖ ያሳድራል፡፡ ይህም ብቻ ሳይሆን ሰዎች ትኩረት ሰጥተው ሊከውኑት የሚገባውን ነገር በአግባቡ እንዳይከውኑ ስለሚያደርግ ውጤታማነትን በጣም ይቀንሳል፡፡
ምንም እንኳ ዘወትር ሞባይል ስልክ ላይ የመጠመድ ነገር በታዳጊዎች ላይ የሚያይል ቢሆንም የተማሩና የተረጋጉ በሚሏቸው ጐልማሶች ላይ መታዘባቸውን በመጥቀስ ችግሩ አሳሳቢ መሆኑን ይናገራሉ፡፡ ከብዙ ነገሮች አንፃር ስልክ በስልክ አይጠመዱም የሚባሉ ሰዎች እንኳ ከስልካችን አንለይ ያሉበት ጊዜ መሆኑን ይገልጻሉ፡፡
‹‹ሁሌም ስልክ ላይ መሆን ዘመን የተሻገሩ የማኅበራዊ እሴቶችን ይሸረሽራል፡፡ አሁን ያለው ሁኔታ ሰዎች መቼ ነው ከስልክ ከኢንተርኔት ዓለም ውይይታቸው ራሳቸውን ገትተው በአካል በተገኙበት ቦታ ወዳሉ ሰዎች ትኩረታቸውን የሚመልሱት?›› ሲሉ በመጨረሻ ጥያቄአቸውን ይሠነዝራሉ፡፡
ትራፊክ ፖሊስ በማይኖርባቸው ቦታዎች ላይ ስልካቸውን እያዩ፣ መልዕክት እየመለሱና ስልክ እያነጋገሩ የሚያሽከረክሩ ጥቂት እንዳልሆኑ በአዲስ አበባ ትራፊክ ፖሊስ ሕዝ ግንኙነት ኢንስፔክተር አሰፋ መዝገቡ ይገልጻሉ፡፡ አስረግጦ ለመናገር ጥናት የሚያስፈልግ ቢሆንም በተደጋጋሚ ከሚታዩ አጋጣሚዎች በመነሳት በአንድም ይሁን በሌላ መንገድ በስልክ ምክንያት የሚደርሱ የትራፊክ አደጋዎች ጥቂት እንደማይሆኑም ይገምታሉ፡፡
በዘንድሮው የፈረንጆች ዓመት አሜሪካ ውስጥ የተሠራ ጥናት እንደሚያሳየው በጥናቱ ከተካተቱ 77 በመቶ የሚሆኑት መንገድ ላይ እየሔዱ በማንኛውም መንገድ ስልካቸውን መጠቀም ችግር የለውም ብለው የሚያስቡ ሲሆን፣ ሦስት አራተኛ የሚሆኑት መደብር ውስጥ ተሰልፈው ወይም በሕዝብ መተላለፊያዎች ስልካቸውን መጠቀማቸው ችግር እንደሌለው ያምናሉ፡፡ ከ88 በመቶ በላይ የሚሆኑት ቤተሰብ ተሰብስቦ እራት እየበላ፣ ስብሰባ ላይ፣ በፊልም ወይም በቴአትር አዳራሽ እንዲሁም በአምልኮ ቦታ ስልክ መጠቀም ተገቢ አይደለም ብለው የሚያምኑ ቢሆንም ተግባራቸው ግን በተቃራኒው መሆኑን ጥናቱ ያሳያል፡፡
የሰዎች ሁልጊዜም ስማርት ፎናቸውን ኦን ማድረግና ስልካቸውን ሳይመለከቱ ደቂቃዎች እንዲያልፉ አለመፈለግ ከፍተኛ ችግር እየሆነ መሆኑን ጥናቱ ይደመድማል፡፡ የመደምደሚያው መሠረት የሰዎች በእውነተኛው ዓለም ከጐናቸው ከተቀመጠ ሰው ይልቅ ትኩረታቸው በስልክ ሲያዝና ፍላጐታቸው በአካል አብሯቸው ካልሆነ ሰው ጋር መነጋገር መሆን መሠረታዊ የሰው ልጆችን የግንኙነት ዘዬ ይረብሻል የሚል ነው፡፡ በጥናቱ የተጠቀሰው ሌላው ችግር ደግሞ አጠገብ ካለ ሰው ይልቅ በስልክ የመጠመድ ነገር በፊት በፊት ይተች የነበረ ቢሆንም ከቅርብ ጊዜ ወዲህ ግን ተቀባይነት እያገኘና እንደ መደበኛ ነገር እየተቆጠረ ብዙዎችም እዚህ መስመር ውስጥ እየገቡ መሆኑ ነው፡፡
በአዲስ አበባ ዩኒቨርሲቲ ሶሺዮሎጂ ዲፓርትመንት መምህር የሆኑት ተባባሪ ፕሮፌሰር ኢዛና ዐምደወርቅ በሞባይል ስልክ የመጠመድ ነገር በስፋት እየታየ መሆኑን ይህም በራሳቸው ዋጋ ያላቸውን ማኅበራዊ ግንኙነቶችን እየረበሸ ሰዎችን ወደ አርቴፊሻል ግንኙነቶች እያሻገረ መሆኑን ያስረዳሉ፡፡
ቀን በትምህርትና በሥራ ተወጥረው የማይገናኙና የማይተያዩ የአንድ ቤተሰብ አባላት ምሽት ላይ ለግማሽ ወይም ለአንድ ሰዓት ራት ላይ ሲገናኙ እንኳ ስልካቸውን ለመተው አለመፈለግ የችግሩን ስፋት እንደሚያሳይ ይገልጻሉ፡፡ ‹‹ተለምነው እራት የሚበሉም አሉ፡፡ በሕይወታቸው ላይ ቀጥተኛ ተፅዕኖ ካላቸው ቤተሰቦቻቸው ይልቅ ከማያይዋቸው ሩቅ ካሉ ምናልባትም እየቆዩና በመሀል እየጠፉም ከሚመልሱላቸው ጓደኞቻቸው ጋር ቻት ማድረግን የሚመርጡ ብዙዎች ናቸው፡፡ ይህ የኢንተርኔት ግንኙነት በብዙ መልኩ እውነተኛውን ግንኙነት አይስተካከለውም አርቴፊሻል ነው፡፡›› ይላሉ፡፡
በስልክ መጠመድ እንደ አዲስ አበባ ባሉና በሌሎች ትልልቅ ከተማዎች ብቻም ሳይሆን በትንንሽ ከተሞችም ቦታ ሳይመረጥ መማሪያ ክፍል፣ ለቅሶ ቤት፣ ሠርግ ላይ እንዲሁም ትልልቅ አገራዊ ስብሰባዎች ላይም እየተስተዋለ መሆኑን መታዘባቸውን ይናገራሉ ተባባሪ ፕሮፌሰሩ፡፡ እሳቸው እንደሚሉት ስብሰባዎች ላይ ወይም ክፍል ውስጥ ሆኖ ማኅበራዊ ድረ ገጽ ማየት ወይም የስልክ መልዕክት ማንበብም ሆነ መመለስ እንደተለመደ ነገር እየታየ መሆኑንም ይጠቁማሉ፡፡
ከጥቂት ዓመታት በፊት ምሥራቅ አፍሪካ ላይ ስማርት ፎን ይዞ መታየት የሚያኮራ ነገር ሆኖ ነበር፡፡ ነገር ግን ይህ ሁኔታ በተለይም ዝቅተኛ ዋጋ ያላቸው ስማርት ፎኖች ገበያውን በማጥለቅለቃቸው ሊቀየር ችሏል፡፡ እንደ ህዋዌ፣ ቴክኖና ዜድቲኢ ያሉ የቻይና ኩባንያዎች በዚህ ሒደት ውስጥ ከፍተኛ ሚና እንዳላቸው ይታወቃል፡፡ በሌላ በኩል ዝቅተኛ ገቢ ላላቸው ተጠቃሚዎች የሚሆኑ ስልኮችን የሚያቀርበው ሳምሰንግም በዚህ ረገድ የሚጠቀስ ነው፡፡
እየጨመረ ያለውን የሰዎችን በስማርት ፎን መጠመድ በመመልከት የተለያዩ አገሮች ለችግሩ ምላሽ እየሰጡ ነው፡፡ በኢንተርኔትና እንደ ሞባይል ባሉ ዲጂታል ቁሶች መጠመድ እንደማንኛውም ሌላ ሱስ እንዲታይ ማድረግ የመጀመሪያው ዕርምጃ ሲሆን፣ ከዚህ ሱስ ማገገቢያ ማዕከል እስከማዘጋጀት የገፉም አሉ፡፡ ለምሳሌ በሴንጋፖር በስልክ ሱስ ለተያዙ የምክር አገልግሎት ማዕከሎች አሉ፡፡ የዚህ ዓይነቱ የኢንተርኔትና የሞባይል ስልክ ሱስ እንደ አእምሯዊ ጤና መዛባት መታየት አለበት የሚል ክርክር የሚያነሱ የሥነ አእምሮ ሐኪሞችም አሉ፡፡
ቀደም ሲል ከስማርት ፎኖች ጋር በተያያዘ ጐልቶ ይታይ የነበረው ችግር በሞባይል ጌሞች መጠመድ ቢሆንም ከቅርብ ጊዜ ወዲህ ግን የማኅበራዊ ድረ ገጾች ሱስ እያየለ መምጣቱን መረጃዎች ያመለክታሉ::

‹‹የመንግሥት አመራር በሙሉ ሙስና ስለፈጸመ ስብስብ አድርጋችሁ የምታደርጉትን አድርጉ የሚል መልዕክት አልደረሰኝም››

ባለፈው ዓርብ መስከረም 7 ቀን 2008 ዓ.ም. ጋዜጣዊ መግለጫ የሰጡት የፌዴራል የሥነ ምግባርና ፀረ ሙስና ኮሚሽነር አቶ ዓሊ ሱሌይማን፣ ከጋዜጠኞች ከተነሱላቸው ጥያቄዎች መካከል አንዱ መንግሥታዊው ሥርዓት በሙስና ውስጥ
መዘፈቁን በግልጽ እየተናገረ፣ ፀረ ሙስና ኮሚሽን ግን በመናኛ ጉዳዮች ላይ አተኩሯል የሚል ነው፡፡ የፖለቲካና የሕግ ቋንቋ የተለያዩ መሆናቸውን የተናገሩት አቶ ዓሊ፣ ፀረ ሙስና ኮሚሽን ዕርምጃ የሚወስደው በማስረጃ ላይ ተመሥርቶ ነው በማለት ምላሽ ሰጥተዋል፡፡ በገዥው ፓርቲ ኢሕአዴግ ጉባዔ ወቅት በሙስና ላይ ቁርጠኛ የሆነ አመራር አለመሰጠቱና ሙስናን መታገል አለመቻሉ ቢገለጽም፣ እከሌ ሙሰኛ ነው ተብሎ መረጃ ባለመቅረቡ ወደ ሕግ ለመሄድ አይቻልም ብለዋል፡፡ መንግሥት አሁንም ሙስናን ለመታገል ቁርጠኛ መሆኑንና እሳቸውም የተረዱት በዚህ መንገድ መሆኑን ገልጸዋል፡፡ ‹‹የመንግሥት አመራር በሙሉ ሙስና ስለፈጸመ ስብስብ አድርጋችሁ የምታደርጉትን አድርጉ የሚል መልዕክት አልደረሰኝም፤›› ያሉት አቶ ዓሊ፣ ከሙስና ጋር በተያያዘ ለተነሱላቸው ጥያቄዎች የሰጡዋቸው ምላሾች በ ቢዝነስና ኢኮኖሚ ገጽ ላይ ተስተናግደዋል፡፡

Your brand new phone could still have malware

A new phone is supposed to be a clean slate. But alarmingly, that's not always the case.
Security company G Data has identified more than 20 mobile phones that have malware installed despite being marketed as new, according to a research report. And it doesn't appear the infection is occurring during manufacturing.
"Somebody is unlocking the phone and putting the malware on there and relocking the phone," said Andy Hayter, security evangelist for G Data.
Many of the suspect phones are sold in Asia and Europe through third parties or middleman and aren't coming directly from the manufacturers, Hayter said.
Brands of affected phones include Xiaomi, Huawei, Lenovo, Alps, ConCorde, DJC, Sesonn and Xido.
G Data has contacted some manufacturers, including Lenovo, whose S860 Android smartphone in one instance was found to have the malware.
Ray Gorman, Lenovo's executive director of external communications, wrote in an email that the device G Data analyzed came from a third-party marketplace. The malware was installed by middlemen, he wrote.
"This is the only such occurrence we have been made aware of," Gorman wrote. "We always recommend customers transact with authorized distribution channels and only accept merchandise that comes in an official box with original factory seals."

The malware is embedded in a legitimate app, such as Facebook, which is sometimes preinstalled on phones, Hayter said. It can read and send text messages, install other apps, collect and change call data, grab location information, record phone calls or send premium SMSes, according to G Data's report.
It's impossible for consumers to remove since it resides inside the phone's firmware.
"You can't take it off there unless you unlock the phone," Hayter said.
G Data was alerted to the problem after receiving support calls from users who said a file had been quarantined but that it couldn't be removed.
The problem has been around for a while. In June 2014, G Data said it found malware in the firmware of a relatively inexpensive Android device made by the Chinese manufacturer Star.
The company's analysts bought Star's N9500 and found malware that purported to be an app for Google's Play Store. The malware, they found, could not be deleted.
In early 2014, Marble Security found malware embedded within Netflix's app that had been preinstalled on six mobile devices made by Samsung Electronics.
That malware grabbed credit card information and passwords and sent it to a server in Russia.

High-Tech 'Smart' Cane Helps Blind People Recognize Faces

A new, high-tech cane for the blind is designed to recognize the faces of the person's friends and family members.
Using smartphone technology, the device — known as the "XploR" mobility cane — can identify faces from up to about 33 feet (10 meters) away, researchers say.
If the cane recognizes someone, it alerts a visually impaired user by vibrating and transmitting a sound signal. The cane is also equipped with GPS to help the user navigate. [Bionic Humans: Top 10 Technologies]

"My grandfather is blindand I know how useful this device could be for him," Steve Adigbo, one of the cane's developers and a student at Birmingham City University in England, said in a statement, adding,"There’s nothing else out there like this at the moment."
The cane works by taking pictures of people in the environment and comparing them to a bank of images stored on an internal memory card, using facial-recognition software. When it finds a match, it produces a vibration and sends a signal to an earpiece via Bluetooth, the researchers said.
The team conducted market research at the Beacon Centre for the Blind in the British town of Wolverhampton, and found that in addition to high-tech features, the cane needed to be lightweight and easy to use.
The researchers have already presented the cane to medical professionals and scientists in Luxembourg and France, and plan to take their device to Germany later this year. They also plan to return to Beacon to test the product and show off its training and security features.
Meanwhile, American researchers have been developing a vibrating vest that uses a variety of sensors to help blind people navigate. The device, dubbed Eyeronman and developed by New York-based company Tactile Navigation Tools, could also help soldiers, firefighters and others in poor visual conditions, researchers say.

የፌደራሉ ከፍተኛ ፍርድ ቤት 5ኛ የወንጀል ችሎትም ተከሳሾቹ የወንጀል ድርጊቱን ማስተባበል ባለመቻላቸው ጥፋተኛ ብሏቸዋል ።

ተከሳሾቹ ወንጀሉን በስምምነት በማበር የፈፀሙት በመሆኑ ቅጣቱ ከፍ ብሎ እንዲወሰን አቃቤ ህግ የቅጣት ማክበጃ አቅርቧል።  

ፍርድ ቤቱም የግራ ቀኙን ክርክር ካዳመጠ በኋላ ተከሳሾቹ ያላቸውን የቅጣት ማቅለያ እንዲያቀርቡ ጠይቋል።

Blues legend B.B. King dies in Las Vegas at age 89

Blues legend B.B. King has died in Las Vegas at age 89, his lawyer says.

Attorney Brent Bryson tells The Associated Press that King died peacefully in his sleep at 9:40 p.m. PDT Thursday at his home in Las Vegas.

The one-time farmhand brought new fans to the blues and influenced a generation of musicians with his heartfelt vocals and soaring guitar on songs such as "The Thrill Is Gone."

King sold millions of records worldwide and was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

King played a Gibson guitar that he affectionately called Lucille and was not only the undisputed king of the blues but a mentor to scores of guitarists including Eric Clapton.

He was awarded his 15th Grammy in 2009 in the traditional blues album category for "One Kind Favor."

Death toll climbs to 96 in fresh Nepal quake

The death toll in a fresh powerful quake that hit Nepal on Tuesday has climbed to 96 and around 2563 others injured, Nepal Police said in its latest update on Thursday.

The 7.5- magnitude quake with an epicenter at Dolakha district, some 130 km east of the capital, suffered the maximum number of human loss as well as infrastructures damage.

Most of the cracked buildings, including houses, government offices and schools, have been badly destroyed by the latest quake.

More than 8,000 people were killed in a massive 7.9-magnitude quake on April 25 and some 17,000 were injured.

Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force along with rescue teams from different countries have been deployed for the rescue operation in such worst-hit districts as Kavre, Sindhupalchowk, Rasuwa and Nuwakot among others.

However, landslides triggered by the earthquake have obstructed roads and relief distribution in parts of the Himalayan country.

Obama meets two Saudi princes after King sent regrets

US President Barack Obama on Wednesday discussed US efforts to forge an international nuclear deal with Iran during talks with Saudi leaders and went out of his way to play down the absence of Saudi King Salman from a summit likely to be dominated by tensions over the topic.

Obama met with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef and Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House after King Salman pulled out of the visit.

"The United States and Saudi Arabia have an extraordinary friendship and relationship that dates back to (President) Franklin Roosevelt," Obama said at the start of the meeting. "We are continuing to build that relationship during a very challenging time," he said.

King Salman decided abruptly to skip the White House meeting and a summit of the Gulf Cooperation Council at the president's Camp David retreat in Maryland outside Washington on Thursday.

The White House has sought to counter perceptions that his absence was a snub that would undermine efforts to reassure the region Washington remains committed to its security in the face of Iran's power and influence.

Obama said he and the Saudi leaders would discuss how to build on a ceasefire in Yemen and work toward "an inclusive, legitimate government" in Saudi Arabia's impoverished neighbor, where a Saudi-led coalition has been bombing Iran-supported Houthi rebels.

He did not mention the Iran nuclear talks in his remarks to the media. White House spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said the leaders discussed the "importance of a comprehensive agreement" between Iran and world powers "that verifiably ensures the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program," referring to efforts by the United States and five other world powers to reach an agreement on curbing Iran's atomic program.

Ethiopia in mourning for victims of Islamic State violence

The Libyan branch of IS on Sunday released a video showing one group of men being beheaded on a beach and another group being shot in a desert.
Ethiopia's government has now confirmed that the people shown being killed were Ethiopian migrant workers.
IS and other jihadist groups are present in several Libyan towns.

Ethiopians have taken to social media to express their shock, anger and grief following the killings, reports the BBC's Anne Soy.
The country's parliament is expected to hold an emergency session.
The African Union, the European Union and the US have also expressed their solidarity with Ethiopia.
The video is similar to previous ones posted by IS, including the beheading of 21 Egyptian Christians in February.
The latest killings appear to have taken place in two regions of Libya - in the south and the east, the BBC's North African correspondent Rana Jawad reports.
Libya has been torn by a civil conflict since last year, our correspondent says.
It has not had a stable government since long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi was toppled in 2011.

AUHIP suspends Sudan’s pre-dialogue meeting in Ethiopia

pril 1, 2015 (KHARTOUM) – The African Union High Level Implementation Panel (AUHIP) announced that it has indefinitely suspended the pre-dialogue preparatory meeting that was scheduled to take place this week after the government and its affiliated political parties refused to attend.

The panel led by former South African president Thabo Mbeki had invited parties participating in the national dialogue process launched by Sudanese president Omer Hassan al-Bashir last January as well as non-participants that include rebel groups.
In a statement, AUHIP recalled that it consulted with all stakeholders including the ruling National Congress Party (NCP) and the 7+7 mechanism of the national dialogue.
Initially the 7+7 was comprised of the NCP and allied political forces including the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), former Darfur rebels from one side and the opposition National Umma Party (NUP), Popular Congress Party (PCP) Reform Now Movement (RNM) and Just Peace Forum (JPF).
However, three opposition forces - NUP, RNM and JPF - suspended their participation in the national dialogue mechanism to protest the refusal of the ruling party to implement a number of measures related to the creation of a conducive environment for the process.
“On the basis of those consultations, the AUHIP invited the stakeholders for the meeting in Addis Ababa on 30 and 31 March, and proposed an agenda which focused solely on the procedural and process issues” the AUHIP statement reads.
“Despite initially indicating that they would respond positively to the Panel’s invitation to participate in the Addis Ababa meeting, key representatives of the “7+7 mechanism” later cited several impediments their attendance of the meeting”.
The 7+7 told AUHIP that several of its members are occupied with the upcoming general elections and also expressed concern that the meeting might be used by some participants “to raise other matters outside of the agreed agenda on process issues”.
“The Panel responded to these concerns by reassuring the stakeholders that the agenda for the meeting was indeed restricted to process issues; that the meeting would be attended only by representatives of the key stakeholders who had agreed to participate in the National Dialogue; and, that the parties were at liberty to compose their delegations as they saw fit”.
“Regrettably, the Panel’s assurances and interactions with the stakeholders did not result in a change of heart by the group”.
AUHIP emphasised “without the full participation of all the key stakeholders, particularly the governing party, it is simply not possible to hold inclusive and credible preparations for the Dialogue as initially envisaged”.
“Consequently, and regrettably, the AUHIP has had no choice but to suspend the holding of the pre-Dialogue meeting”.
MBEKI MEETS OPPOSITION DELEGATION
However, Mbeki held discussions with the delegates of Sudan Call forces who arrived in Addis Ababa including NUP chief al-Sadiq al-Mahdi and chairman of the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) Malik Agar.
Agar said that they conveyed to Mbeki their full support for peaceful resolution of the conflict in Sudan through "dialogue and debate" and expressed their "disappointment" over the government’s refusal to participate in the meeting.
"We discussed that holding elections before the national dialogue would be the end of AUHUP work over the [last] four years and there must be new ways to address the issues of Sudan," Agar said.
He said that all this depends on Mbeki’s report to the UN Security Council (UNSC) on the peace process in Sudan.
The SRF chairman said they were willing to contribute to changing the situation by announcing the possibility of discussing ceasefire for humanitarian issues and opening corridors to deliver aid and stopping aerial bombardment as a priority.
Agar said that the old way of mixing political and security issues resulted in poor conditions of civilians in war zones that are deteriorating thus require decoupling political and security tracks.
He also said they are prepared to discuss the issues of public freedoms on the basis of their contribution to the creation of a favourable environment for dialogue.
For his part, al-Mahdi, commended AUHIP for not allowing any party "to veto the peace process in Sudan".
He said that he presented a proposal to Mbeki to transition from the current framework to a new one but he did not elaborate.
Al-Mahdi said the meeting is an opportunity to confirm that "mo matter how the NCP position is twisted, our position is commitment to a political solution and we believe that any attempt to resolve these issues militarily as does the NCP will fail".
Yasser Arman, secretary-general of the Sudan People Liberation Movement North (SPLM-N), blamed the NCP for failure of the AUHIP meeting.
"The National chose war over peace and chose to continue its totalitarian and solitary approach rather than dialogue" Arman said.
AUHIP said it will also hold consultations with representatives of the international community before considering its next steps.
Last week, the office of US Vice President Joe Biden said that he called Mbeki and discussed with him "the importance of establishing one nation-wide approach to ending the conflicts in Sudan" and "the urgent need for continued pressure on the Sudanese government and opposition leaders, as well as civil society groups, to begin the process of a national dialogue".
"The Vice-President emphasised that African Union leadership will be crucial to promoting inclusive governance, ensuring respect for human rights, and urgently bringing the conflicts in Blue Nile, Southern Kordofan, and Darfur to a peaceful end. They agreed to continue closely coordinating African Union and U.S. efforts".

Ethiopian activists, JAFI clash over Passover Seders

Ethiopian immigrants throughout the country have been left without invitations to communal Passover Seders, community activists complained to the media on Wednesday, while a spokesman for the Jewish Agency said that arrangements were in place for all the Ethiopian olim residing in the organization’s absorption centers.

“We heard that there will not be a Passover Seder for olim in the absorption centers just yesterday, only three days before Passover,” Hana Elazar Legesse, spokeswoman for the Israel Association of Ethiopian Jews, told The Jerusalem Post.

“We immediately inquired with the Absorption Ministry, who responded that this was the responsibility of the Jewish Agency. We repeatedly tried to contact them for answers, but did not receive any response,” she explained.

A ministry spokesman likewise referred the Post to the agency.

According to Elazar Legesse, the association received a response from the agency only following media coverage of the matter, when the agency said it would like the olim to become more independent and learn to hold the Seder on their own. As such, she said, the olim were granted vouchers totaling some NIS 150 to NIS 300 for the holiday and were given tutorials on how to host a Seder.

“In Kiryat Gat and Ayelet Hashahar in the North, the olim were able to organize a last-minute Seder in the absorption centers. But there are olim all over the country, some without any family, and unfortunately it seems that they will simply not hold a Seder this year,” she explained.

Asked about the reports and Elazar Legesse’s statement, agency spokesman Avi Mayer said that “Ethiopian immigrants residing in Jewish Agency absorption centers were informed more than three weeks ago that there would not be communal Passover seders for veteran immigrants, in accordance with the organization’s established practice.

“In the interim, he added, “absorption center staff members have been working with each family to ensure that they are able to fully celebrate the holiday, either with their extended families residing outside of the absorption center— as in the vast majority of cases—or in their own family settings on-site. Families that choose to hold their own seders within their absorption centers have received the full support and accompaniment of Jewish Agency staff. We would never permit a situation in which families were left without seder plans mere days before the holiday.”

Mayer added that “something that was never scheduled to take place cannot be canceled.

Nothing that would otherwise have taken place has been canceled.

We do not generally hold communal Seders for veteran immigrants from Ethiopia or from any other country.”

While it has long been his organization’s practice to hold communal Seders for recently arrived Ethiopian immigrants in the absorption centers, once they are in Israel for more than a year “and develop greater independence, we encourage them to hold their own Seders or to join their families for the holiday,” he explained.

Elazar Legesse was skeptical of such explanations, however, telling the Post that “if they want the olim to be independent, they need to help them leave the absorption centers and not just tell them to hold a Seder by themselves at the last minute – this is a ridiculous response.”

She said that the Ethiopian immigrants believe that the cancellation of the Seders by the agency was intended as a response to protests held last week in Kiryat Gat over their living conditions in the absorption centers, and that this incident is indicative of a much deeper problem facing Ethiopian olim in absorption centers.

Ethiopian immigrants comprise some 80 percent of olim living in absorption centers in Israel, explained Elazar Legesse.

“They are living in horrendous conditions – the physical structures are very old and unsanitary, not to mention overcrowded. In one small room you can find a full family with children, or a couple who have to share a room with a single young man,” she said.

According to Elazar Legesse, these horrible living conditions are maintained in an effort to motivate the Ethiopian immigrants to leave the absorption centers.

The centers are meant to assist the immigrants for a period of up to two years, after which they are granted a housing grant and encouraged to leave and build a new life in Israel.

The problem, however, is that many immigrants are simply unable to do so and remain in the absorption centers for years.

“There are elderly immigrants or single young men without families that come to Israel.

They can’t leave after two years, they can’t afford to buy an apartment, they are simply stuck in these absorption centers – some already for 10 years,” she explained.

“The notion that a policy in place for years was meant to penalize immigrants for their actions last week is logically deficient,” Mayer countered, saying that the agency “will gladly assist immigrants unable to hold their own Passover Seders for any reason.”

“The State of Israel has accommodated recently arrived immigrants in absorption centers throughout its existence. This temporary housing solution has worked for hundreds of thousands of immigrants from around the world, and it continues to be instrumental to many immigrants’ absorption today. That some immigrants may encounter challenges integrating into Israeli society after their housing eligibility expires is a matter to be addressed on a societal level, not by feeding immigrants and journalists false information and leveling baseless accusations at the organization doing more than any other to successfully absorb immigrants into their new homeland.”

Court Rejects Allegation By Orchid Against Yonas Kassahun Over Three Bobcat Trucks

Yonas, who had been set free two months ago from jail for cyber crime, has a counter action for compensation still in court

The Lideta Federal High Court rejected a suit filed by Orchid Business Group Plc (OBG) against Yonas Kassahun demanding the transfer of ownership of three Bobcat trucks and compensation for time the trucks had been suspended from use.
Yonas had also filed a cross action claiming ownership of the trucks and a compensation for the service the trucks had rendered to Orchid. The cross-action is what remains with the court now, as the court has thrown out Orchid's claim.
Orchid, a business group composing different investment companies, is engaged in the business of transport, machinery rental, transit, construction, horticulture and other businesses. Owned and managed by Akiko Seyom, the company had been previously involved in litigation, both civil and criminal, with Yonas Kassahun, a Diaspora investor holding German citizenship.
Orchid had conditionally won an auction to participate in a petroleum extraction project at Kobye area in the Southern Regional State. One of the conditions Orchid had to fulfill for its auction with the project was supplying three Bobcat trucks, which led to a deal between Orchid and Bobcat Bensheim GmbH in Germany.
Due to deficit of foreign currency, Orchid could not discharge its contractual payment in a timely manner, as indicated in the statement claim. Yonas Kassahun, Akiko's friend at the time agreed to get the trucks to Ethiopia using his duty free status, Orchid claimed; this arrangement caused the legal litigation between the two.
Orchid alleged in its claim filed on March 4, 2013, that the trucks had been delivered to it in the name of Yonas after Soldan International Plc, a sister company of Orchid based in Dubai, paid 106,000 euro to the supplier in Germany.
To transfer the trucks into its name, Orchid said that it had concluded a sale contract worth 1.9 million Br with Yonas, but Yonas had refused to transfer the vehicle ownership and he ordered the trucks to be suspended from work at the project. Thus, Orchid asked the Court to order forced performance of the contract and asked four million Birr compensation for the damages it incurred due to the suspension.
Objecting that Orchid could not sue him to be forced to transfer the trucks, as they are already in the hands of Orchid, and claiming that it is not up to the courts to decide on issues related to transferring ownership, Yonas himself instituted a cross action on Orchid and his own agent Yared Fikre at the same lawsuit, on April 15, 2013. Decision about ownership transfer is an administrative function, Yonas claimed.
In his cross action, Yonas alleged that his agent, Yared Fikre, had concluded three contractual agreements for the transfer of the heavy trucks to Orchid, exceeding the agency duties given to him by Yonas and law of the agency. Reminding that he did not even receive the sales proceeds, Yonas asked the Court to order the handing over of the trucks to him and refund the money gained by Orchid so far as it was renting the trucks.
Orchid objected the cross action by saying that Yonas had no grounds to sue because beyond the contract signed between Orchid and the agent, there is an actual contract for the sale of the trucks between Orchid and Yonas himself. Yared on his side defended that he signed the sale contract because he had acquired an agency right to do so from Yonas himself.
The Court rejected the forced performance claim of Orchid by saying that Orchid had clearly provided in its allegation that the three trucks are in its hands and there is nothing that the defendant had not fulfilled.
On the transfer of the name of the trucks, the Court had also rejected the allegation by referring the transfer as the prerogative of an administrative organ not the courts. Rejecting the preliminary objections of Orchid, the Court decided to continue with the hearing of the counter action instituted by Yonas and made an appointment for the next hearing on July 15, 2015.
Yonas had been set free two months ago from jail for cyber crime after the High Court's decision of six month imprisonment on suspension.

Egyptian President Calls For Strong Partnership With Ethiopia

Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has called for strong partnership and cooperation between Egypt and Ethiopia.

Al-Sisi said at a joint session of the House of People's Representatives and House of Federation of the parliament here Wednesday that the two countries needed to work together for peace and prosperity.

He said his visit to Ethiopia -- the first by an Egyptian president in 30 years -- was aimed at conveying the message of peace and prosperity from the people of Egypt to Ethiopia.

"I stand before you carrying a message of sincere fraternity and true affection to you seeking cooperation for progress and prosperity from your brothers in Egypt," he said.

The president said Egypt had a strong political commitment for dialogue and communication with Ethiopia at all levels and through different forums.

"The River Nile flowing through both countries should be a source of cooperation between the two countries instead of conflict," he said.

Al-Sisi recalled that both Egypt and Ethiopia had worked for the realisation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), precursor of the African Union (AU) and said both countries required stronger cooperation and solidarity to face today's challenges.

Al-Sisi pointed out that the two countries must write together a new chapter of bilateral relations guided by the principles of cooperation and realise common interests directed to development and welfare.

Leaders of Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan had shown strong political will to sign the document on the Declaration of Principles on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam project in Khartoum on Monday.
