Your brand new phone could still have malware

A new phone is supposed to be a clean slate. But alarmingly, that's not always the case.
Security company G Data has identified more than 20 mobile phones that have malware installed despite being marketed as new, according to a research report. And it doesn't appear the infection is occurring during manufacturing.
"Somebody is unlocking the phone and putting the malware on there and relocking the phone," said Andy Hayter, security evangelist for G Data.
Many of the suspect phones are sold in Asia and Europe through third parties or middleman and aren't coming directly from the manufacturers, Hayter said.
Brands of affected phones include Xiaomi, Huawei, Lenovo, Alps, ConCorde, DJC, Sesonn and Xido.
G Data has contacted some manufacturers, including Lenovo, whose S860 Android smartphone in one instance was found to have the malware.
Ray Gorman, Lenovo's executive director of external communications, wrote in an email that the device G Data analyzed came from a third-party marketplace. The malware was installed by middlemen, he wrote.
"This is the only such occurrence we have been made aware of," Gorman wrote. "We always recommend customers transact with authorized distribution channels and only accept merchandise that comes in an official box with original factory seals."

The malware is embedded in a legitimate app, such as Facebook, which is sometimes preinstalled on phones, Hayter said. It can read and send text messages, install other apps, collect and change call data, grab location information, record phone calls or send premium SMSes, according to G Data's report.
It's impossible for consumers to remove since it resides inside the phone's firmware.
"You can't take it off there unless you unlock the phone," Hayter said.
G Data was alerted to the problem after receiving support calls from users who said a file had been quarantined but that it couldn't be removed.
The problem has been around for a while. In June 2014, G Data said it found malware in the firmware of a relatively inexpensive Android device made by the Chinese manufacturer Star.
The company's analysts bought Star's N9500 and found malware that purported to be an app for Google's Play Store. The malware, they found, could not be deleted.
In early 2014, Marble Security found malware embedded within Netflix's app that had been preinstalled on six mobile devices made by Samsung Electronics.
That malware grabbed credit card information and passwords and sent it to a server in Russia.

High-Tech 'Smart' Cane Helps Blind People Recognize Faces

A new, high-tech cane for the blind is designed to recognize the faces of the person's friends and family members.
Using smartphone technology, the device — known as the "XploR" mobility cane — can identify faces from up to about 33 feet (10 meters) away, researchers say.
If the cane recognizes someone, it alerts a visually impaired user by vibrating and transmitting a sound signal. The cane is also equipped with GPS to help the user navigate. [Bionic Humans: Top 10 Technologies]

"My grandfather is blindand I know how useful this device could be for him," Steve Adigbo, one of the cane's developers and a student at Birmingham City University in England, said in a statement, adding,"There’s nothing else out there like this at the moment."
The cane works by taking pictures of people in the environment and comparing them to a bank of images stored on an internal memory card, using facial-recognition software. When it finds a match, it produces a vibration and sends a signal to an earpiece via Bluetooth, the researchers said.
The team conducted market research at the Beacon Centre for the Blind in the British town of Wolverhampton, and found that in addition to high-tech features, the cane needed to be lightweight and easy to use.
The researchers have already presented the cane to medical professionals and scientists in Luxembourg and France, and plan to take their device to Germany later this year. They also plan to return to Beacon to test the product and show off its training and security features.
Meanwhile, American researchers have been developing a vibrating vest that uses a variety of sensors to help blind people navigate. The device, dubbed Eyeronman and developed by New York-based company Tactile Navigation Tools, could also help soldiers, firefighters and others in poor visual conditions, researchers say.

ተከሳሾቹ ለአቶ ዮናታን ባልቻ መኪና በማከራየት የኪራይ ስምምነት ውል ያላቸው ሲሆን፥ በውላቸው መሰረትም ሚያዚያ 8 ቀን 2005 ዓ.ም ከምሽቱ 2 ሰአት አካባቢ የ4 ሺህ ብር ቼክ ተቀብለዋል።

ግለሰቦቹ ሚያዚያ 12 ቀን 2005 ዓ.ም ላይም ከመኪና ተከራዩ አቶ ዮናታን በተቀበሉት የ4 ሺህ ብር ቼክ ላይ ከፊት ለፊቱ 2 ቁጥርን በመጨመር ተጨማሪ 20 ሺህ ብር ከባንክ ቤቱ አውጥተዋል።

በዚህም መሰረት የፌደራሉ አቃቤ ህግ ተከሳሾቹ የማይገባቸውን ብልጽግና ለማግኘት በማሰብ በፈፀሙት ወንጀል ክስ በመመስረት የሰውና የሰነድ ማስረጃዎችን አቅርቧል።

የፌደራሉ ከፍተኛ ፍርድ ቤት 5ኛ የወንጀል ችሎትም ተከሳሾቹ የወንጀል ድርጊቱን ማስተባበል ባለመቻላቸው ጥፋተኛ ብሏቸዋል ።

ተከሳሾቹ ወንጀሉን በስምምነት በማበር የፈፀሙት በመሆኑ ቅጣቱ ከፍ ብሎ እንዲወሰን አቃቤ ህግ የቅጣት ማክበጃ አቅርቧል።  

ፍርድ ቤቱም የግራ ቀኙን ክርክር ካዳመጠ በኋላ ተከሳሾቹ ያላቸውን የቅጣት ማቅለያ እንዲያቀርቡ ጠይቋል።

በዚህም 1ኛ ተከሳሽ ቤዛዊት መስፍን የዕድሜዋን ወጣትነት፣ ከዚህ ቀደም በምንም አይነት የወንጀል ድርጊት አለመሳተፏንና የቤተሰብ አስተዳዳሪ መሆኗን በቅጣት ማቅለያነት አቅርባለች።

2ኛ ተከሳሽ አቶ ነቢል ይማም ምንም አይነት የቅጣት ማቅለያዎችን አላቀረበም።

የፌደራሉ ከፍተኛ ፍርድ ቤት 5ኛ የወንጀል ችሎትም 1ኛ ተከሳሽን በ6 ወር ቀላል እስራትና በ1 ሺህ 500 ብር እንዲሁም 2ኛ ተከሳሽን በ1 አመት ከ6 ወር እና በ3 ሺህ ብር እንዲቀጡ ወስኗል።

Blues legend B.B. King dies in Las Vegas at age 89

Blues legend B.B. King has died in Las Vegas at age 89, his lawyer says.

Attorney Brent Bryson tells The Associated Press that King died peacefully in his sleep at 9:40 p.m. PDT Thursday at his home in Las Vegas.

The one-time farmhand brought new fans to the blues and influenced a generation of musicians with his heartfelt vocals and soaring guitar on songs such as "The Thrill Is Gone."

King sold millions of records worldwide and was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

King played a Gibson guitar that he affectionately called Lucille and was not only the undisputed king of the blues but a mentor to scores of guitarists including Eric Clapton.

He was awarded his 15th Grammy in 2009 in the traditional blues album category for "One Kind Favor."
